Dover teen will never walk again DOVER — Following a devastating crash on Glenwood Avenue last week, Dover teenager Lindsey Kennell remains on life support, and will never walk again, according to family members.
"This little girl is hurt very badly," said her father Jim Keiley, of Hampton Beach. "Our families are devastated and our hearts are broken."
Doctors have informed Keiley that his 14-year-old daughter will never walk again due to major spinal cord injuries. She remains in an induced coma to keep her from moving, Keiley said.
"The kid's an athlete— she wants out of that bed and she wants to get home," Keiley said.
Keiley said the family is withholding her whereabouts because, though many friends are well-intentioned, Kennell is unable to receive visitors. She will undergo a 7-10 hour surgery today, according to Keiley, which if it goes well, may allow her use of her arms and hands in the future.
But doctors have warned her parents that she faces at least a two-year hospitalized rehabilitation. "It's catastrophic. It's a tragedy," Keiley said.
According to police, Cory B. Hanscom, 17, was driving the 1995 Hyundai Accent that crashed head-on into a tree on the front lawn of 67 Glenwood Ave., last Thursday. Police say speed was a factor in the crash, but since the road was unpaved, members of the accident reconstruction team had little to work with.
Kennell was sitting in the back seat of the Hyundai Accent behind the driver's seat and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Her mother, Sadie Kennell, of Dover, stressed the importance of seat-belt safety and standing up to peer pressure.
"When you are in a situation that you know is not right, don't be afraid to speak up and say, 'Hey this is not right, slow down and let's get out of here. This is not cool," Sadie Kennell said. She added Dover police and fire, as well as friends and family have been extremely supportive.
Hanscom, of 10 Brick Road, will likely face criminal charges in connection with the crash, police said. He was also recently arrested in connection with a string of concession-stand break-ins that have nearly reached double-digits since April.
The Hyundai Accent was traveling on an unpaved portion of the road which has been under construction for nearly two months and closed to all but local traffic.
Hanscom and two other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital where they were treated and released.
A construction worker in the area told reporters and police he had seen Hanscom speeding on the road at least 10 times since crews began working there.
He claimed to have spoken with Hanscom about three times about his speed.

crying my eyes out. i can't believe this happened. it's mr allen (santa claus) wife
This is a printer friendly version of an article from www.fosters.com To print this article open the file menu and choose Print.
Back Article published Jun 23, 2006 Pedestrian killed in Dover accident recalled as a 'loving' mother DOVER — Family members and friends are mourning the loss of an educator, theather enthusiast, and "overwhelmingly loving" mother and grandmother this week.
Cathy Allen, a tutor in the Dover school system for many years, was struck by a motorist and killed Wednesday night as she was walking across Chestnut Street. She was 56 years old.
Son Andy Allen, 29, said the suddenness of his mother's death was striking. "It's one of those things where you hear stories, but you never expect it to happen to someone in your family," he said.
At the time of the accident, Allen was leaving theater rehearsal at the Bell Center for the Performing Arts, where she was a chorus member in an upcoming production of "Once Upon a Mattress." She was crossing the street in front of St. Mary's Church with two other women when a vehicle struck her.
The wife of Dover teacher Tom Allen, Allen was described by family as a lover of theater, a trait passed down to her daughter, Alexis Dascoulias, 34, who she was set to work with in Once Upon a Mattress. Dascoulias is chair of the Board of Trustees for the Cocheco Arts and Technology Academy.
"She (Cathy Allen) was a supporter, performer, and proud parent of a theater daughter and son-in-law," said Steve Dascoulias, husband of Alexis.
Mourning family members are gathered at the Allens' home on Spruce Lane Extension. According to son Andy, the Allens lived in a different home on the same lot when they were first married 36 years ago, and always loved their current home.
They moved around several times throughout their marriage, but came back to what Andy called their "dream house" 10 years ago when it went up for sale.
The Allens have four children — Andy, Alexis, Michael, 32, and Jonathan, 25 — and two grandchildren, Aidan, 4, and Genevieve, 2. The whole family remains in Dover.
"We're very lucky to have everyone close. We're a very close family — we're not just family, we're friends," Andy Allen said.
Cathy Allen recently portrayed Grandma Tzeitel in "Fiddler on the Roof" for the fifth time with the Seacoast Repertory Theatre. She had performed with a number of theater groups in the area, including the Garrison Players and Hackmatack Playhouse. She also sang with the First Parish Congregational Church in Somersworth for as long as any in her family can remember.
Before working, she stayed home with her four children until the youngest was in first grade. "Dad worked and she took care of us. She made us happy," Andy Allen said. In her professional life, Allen lent her enthusisam to education.
She was a Title I tutor at Dover Middle School for 16 years, and recently completed her first year as a reading tutor at Woodman Park School. Allen was described as an avid reader who went through a book a day.
Jean Briggs, director of federal projects for the district, hired Allen in 1990.
"She was great with the students," Briggs said. "She had a good sense of humor. She was always smiling and laughing."
Cathy Allen's husband Tom retired from the Dover School District and is now a math teacher at the Cocheco Arts and Technology Academy. Allen was on the design team that drafted CATA's charter.
This summer, Cathy Allen was set to launch a theater program for children in coordination with the Garrison Players.
Born in Somersworth, and a Somersworth High School graduate, Cathy Allen met her husband, Tom, while they were attending the University of New Hampshire. Family members said they have heard the story of their courtship hundreds of times.
When they first started dating, Cathy would visit Tom on the dairy farm in Durham where he grew up, and help him milk the cows.
On one visit, Tom's brother was goofing around and chasing Cathy around the barn. She slipped and fell into a gutter filled with horse manure.
She got up and laughed hysterically.
According to family members, Tom knew by his future wife's reaction that she was for him.
"He thought this must be the right girl if she can laugh about falling in manure," said Steve Dascoulias.
Andy Allen said this image of his mother laughing, covered with cow manure is indicative of her personality. "She just takes things as they come," he said.
Family members said Cathy Allen had an innocence that made her a joy to be around.
"She made you laugh — sometimes not on purpose," Andy Allen said.
Democrat Staff Writer Larry Clow contributed to this report.

so kaytee yesterday told paul i looked pretty in my yearbook pic. then she said to john whispering"shed look good everyday if she washed her hair" well.. i see you don't know what it's like to be an asian with thick hair :] *message sent to kaytee houghton* invisibleXDamage: um hi. i just wanted to say that i do wash my hair everyday. every morning to be exact, but since i am a filipino the natural oils in my hair give it a shine... the one days where it looks "completely dried" is when i blow dry it or straighten it.. but i don't like doing that everyday so usually i leave it down & let it air dry. but if you'd like to reccommend a shampoo and conditioner to me that would change my filipino hair folicles to american ones i'd be glad to hear it. i use garnier fructis & herbal essences. what do you suggest i do so my hair is to your liking ? ToKute2bYrs is away at 6:08:21 PM.
